Follow your heart

What advice would you give to a student leaving a school? To continue studies at university or at college? To find a job? To move out of your parents’ home, to start an independent life? In my humble opinion, no matter what you do, you have to listen to your heart.

To begin with, this year I graduated from gymnasium. For a long time I was firmly determined to study abroad, but later, I started to think about studying in my own country. However, I still don‘t know what and where I want to study, I decided to take a gap year. I believe, I need more time to decide on my future. Therefore, I came to the idea of volunteering abroad.

Moreover, I dream about work related to education and youth policy, so I would like to see does this profession suit for me. Also, I want to volunteer in a school that is why I have been looking for the appropriate project for a very long time. It took a lot of time to find the best project, but here I am.

On my newest life journey I symbolically embarked on the day of new beginnings and knowledge – September first. On that day I moved to Slovenia. As if now I remember that day. Everyone asks me why I chose Slovenia, but the fact is that Slovenia chose me and I am really happy.

I can‘t believe it‘s been a month since I started volunteering. I have done a lot during this time, but comparatively little to what I want to do. At school are just the first steps: observing lessons, presentations about my country, teaching some basic Lithuanian words. What is more, not only in English but also in Math classes I can be helpful. During my free time I play volleyball and badminton, I travel, go for a walk because I live in such a beautiful place in the town between the hills.

The most important thing when living abroad is to remember your identity, your purposes, your values. My goal is to find myself, to share my experience, knowledge as well as become independent and responsible not only for myself, but also for others, for the team. I want to be an example, I want to motivate people to pursue their goals and dreams, to go their own way, not that of mom or dad.

When you live abroad, that unknown and a bit of excitement let you to say yes to everything, even though it is not your cup of tea, and to take absolutely every opportunity if you want to call that time abroad the best year of your life.

Do as the heart tells you. Because it never lies.
